The distress call came at 0300. Lieutenant Jack Morrison of the US Coast Guard guided his cutter toward the coordinates, expecting a foundering fishing boat. Instead, he found a massive liner, its lights blazing, its decks crowded with passengers in old-fashioned clothes.
